"Hello everyone, I am Xiao Li, from Eryuan, Dali. I love the mountains and rivers of my hometown. Sometimes I go exploring the rivers and lakes in a kayak or paddleboard, sometimes I ride a dirt bike up the mountains, and I also like to explore the outside world. I used to be a surfing instructor for a while. Every Tuesday, I take guests to Fengyu to wander around the traditional market. During the plum blossom season, I go hiking in the mountains. During the plum blossom season, I brew green plum wine. I hope to have the opportunity to share these daily lives with you."

Last year, after leading the "Hiking in the Snow Mountain Plum Blossom Forest" activity, I felt it was meaningful to brew a bottle of green plum wine under the plum trees.

Dali Songhe Village | Qiqi

At the end of 2022, Brother Mao took the lead to get the nearby plum farmers to build a road, which gave us the opportunity to go deeper into the mountains and see their lives. The truly good things were discovered. Deep in the mountains, the plum farmers no longer had to use manual labor and horses to transport plums, honey, and papayas to the market and try to sell them in every possible way.

The first time I went to Brother Mao's plum orchard, what attracted me was not the plum blossoms or the plums, but the local honey under his plum trees. Once, when I went to Fengyu market, I chatted with a vendor selling pickled plums. I learned that he was also from Songhe Village. I said I knew Brother Mao and he was from the same village. As soon as I finished, he immediately praised Brother Mao's local honey without reservation. This left a deep impression on me. More than 40 years ago, when Brother Mao's father was in his prime, he took red soil from the mountains and made it into bricks. He used the red soil bricks to build beehives and small houses. It was also the first time I saw how local honey was cut off, and I tasted the freshly cut honey. Because the flowering periods of plants on the mountain are different, the types of nectar collected by bees are also different, so it is also called wildflower honey. Therefore, the fresh honey tasted in each season has a different flavor.

The plums in Eryuan come later due to the climate and altitude. The place where we pick plums is "Songhe Village", located in Eryuan County. Eryuan is not only the source of Erhai Lake but also the main source of Dali plums. The local plum processing enterprise "Erbao Industry" has its ten-thousand-mu plum planting base here, and the beverage "Green Plum Cool" has been drunk by every Eryuan native since childhood. It also has the title "Hometown of Ancient Chinese Plums" and so on.

At the origin of the plums, pick the plums under the plum tree yourself, wash them, remove the stems, and carve them. Use the high-alcohol white liquor brewed from the water of an ancient well at the foot of Cangshan Yunlong Peak to make a bottle of your own green plum wine. After three months, you can taste the memory of you and Dali Eryuan.

Itinerary:

10:00 Depart from Dali

12:00 Arrive at the plum orchard, start picking green plums, remove stems, wash, and air dry

While waiting for them to dry, we can watch honey cutting, taste fresh honey and beeswax, then go to the stream by the plum forest for some stream play

After returning, the plums are dry, start carving the plums with a toothpick. You can prick your favorite patterns, then put them in a glass bottle, add yellow rock sugar and white liquor, stick on a label, and a bottle of green plum wine is done. Quietly wait for three months, then it's ready to drink.

Around 15:30 Return trip

On the way back, we can go to Dengchuan local Muslim restaurant together for dinner, the cost is shared. (Per person 20-40 RMB)

A day of picking green plums to make wine. We drove for almost two hours, with the last stretch on a dirt road, deep into a Yi village in the mountains. The elderly couple picking plums worked so hard and even shared baba cakes and honey with us! Xiao Li shared some plum wine he made last year – it was delicious! After picking and washing plums, we worked until 2 pm and had claypot rice cooked over a wood fire on a stone stove. We also harvested honey – so sweet, and the little bees were so industrious. We put labels on the plum wine, ready to be opened next year. A truly meaningful day. Xiao Li and Shitou are both such warm-hearted guys.

#Recording making plum wine at Meiziyuan, Pibi Lake Town We drove a small van through 28 winding mountain bends to reach a private small plum orchard at over 2500 meters altitude, with no water, no electricity, no Wi-Fi. We stayed there the whole day. Along the way, we encountered wild raspberries—small, dark, sour and sweet. We picked some, but guide Xiao Li said not to take them all, leaving some for others. Since it rained the night before, the ground and firewood were damp, making it hard to start a fire. The fire went out several times. Each time Xiao Li got it going and let us fan it, we fanned it out [facepalm]. Later, after finishing other tasks, Xiao Li stayed by the fire until it stabilized, and finally cooked the meal [tears of laughter]. From picking plums, selecting them, washing off the fuzz one by one, rinsing with clean water, rubbing with salt to remove bitterness, soaking in salt water, drying, removing stems, weighing according to ratio, putting into jars, and labeling—we each did our own part from start to finish. I enjoyed the process of doing everything by hand, slowly making a jar of green plum wine that can be stored for years. I wonder what it will taste like after ten years, but recalling today, it will surely be a memory of happiness, peace, and contentment [heart]. After making the plum wine and plum syrup, we also hiked to the stream source behind the mountain, basked in a little sunshine, walked through vast fields of healing mugwort, picked incredibly flavorful wild Sichuan pepper, and found unripe wild walnuts that had been abandoned (we only realized they were unripe after picking them). At the mountaintop, we threw small stones into the mountain stream and heard a few "plops"—so pleasant and relaxing. It felt like going back to childhood, when every weekend or holiday we would gather friends to go on adventures in the mountains. The mountains are deep and generous, the air filled with oxygen. I felt every pore of my body was cleansed. I don't know how my two boys will remember today, but at that moment, they were completely relaxed and joyful—and that makes it all worth it.
