Shops like 'Wa Style BBQ' are probably the most common type in Dali. After dinner time, the only places to eat are such family BBQ shops. The Dali Old Town area is generally rural. So this kind of BBQ shop is different from the tourist stone-grill BBQ in the old town. They are scattered in every village, usually with family members working as chefs and waitstaff.
I chose 'Wa Style BBQ' because I once lived in the Guanyintang area for six years, and for two years I lived in the alley where this shop is located, a dozen meters off the main street. A friend was having a late-night snack here, so I joined. There is a good variety of BBQ items, the ingredients are carefully prepared and fresh, and the taste is good, especially the fried rice noodles and rice shreds, which are very fragrant (I later found that most BBQ shops do a good job with these). The host is friendly, and there is a family atmosphere among the staff, which feels great.
Unlike most newly opened, bright, tiled BBQ shops, this one has a somewhat shabby and narrow entrance. The dining area is inside, quite spacious, with low tables and chairs.
Most customers are locals living nearby, who come for a quick bite and also for social chat.
So, if you want to experience a very local, old-style BBQ shop and the main nightlife of the village, you can try such a BBQ shop. It will be quite rewarding.
It doesn't have to be 'Wa Style BBQ' specifically; it's just one of them, similar yet a bit different.
