Shaxi

130 km from the old town. Everyone who goes there says they love it, exceeding expectations. It is a town on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, maintained by a Swiss foundation, so it retains its original character without disorder. Just a few steps outside the town is the Heihui River, along which you can take a walk, surrounded by fields, feeling relaxed and joyful. Find a place called Banshan Coffee (just as a landmark), walk there to overlook the town and valley. If you have more time, Shibao Mountain is also a good nearby attraction, with many cliff-side Buddha statues, and there are hiking trails. You can search for "Shadeng Jing Grotto Area". There is a hiking trail going up (an exploratory route, for ordinary people caution, pair with app: maps.me to see tracks). I have only been to three good local restaurants: Dazhong Restaurant (fish soup is very good), Lihua Restaurant (beef and local dishes), Longfeng Ruiying Restaurant, affordable and delicious. You can rent a car to go (suggest taking the Niusha Route, which is less crowded and beautiful, turn at Niujie up the mountain, the road in the village before entering Niusha Route is not great, you may doubt you are on the wrong road). Yanzi and Evan's 'Shanfei Distillery' MB Distillery

A few days ago (March 12, 2025), I visited Yanzi and Evan's 'Shanfei Distillery' for the first time with Cheng Chang and Guo Ying. I had known about it before, and had also seen their distilled spirits at Pushi Bakery, but my understanding was limited. I don't know much about wine, and I don't drink alcohol. But Xiao Chun said it was great; he runs a professional whisky bar. There, I listened to the conversation between Yanzi and Cheng Chang, and felt her and Evan's love and enthusiasm. Sting and His Wuliang Mountain Coffee Beans (Continuing Business)

Yushan Bakery

Yushan Bakery opened near Dali University in 2017, when there were not many shops in that area, and not many making European-style bread. Sannei Croissant

Bread & Water Cafe

Bread & Water is a small community cafe located in a quiet alley on Yincang Road in the old town. Since I rarely go to the old town, I only visited twice. Most of the customers are regulars, creating a relaxed atmosphere. Da Mao is the owner and makes coffee every day. Every year, she uses persimmons from the tree in the yard to make special dried persimmons. Her personality and aesthetic define the place—hard to describe, but wonderful. If you're in the old town, drop by for a drink and experience the quiet, natural side of the commercialized Dali Old Town. I first heard about it from Xiao Hua, a coffee roaster, who said the dirty (or maybe latte) at Bread & Water is the best he's ever had.

Zhaishu Vegetarian Restaurant

Zhaishu: The new store has opened on Cangshan Avenue. A wide variety of items, slightly Western-style dishes, affordable prices. The braised rice with broad beans is very special, and there are also rice dishes with mushrooms. The new store is cleaner, more spacious, and has more choices. The old store was frequented by many in the community. I've also been there several times.

Su Le Vegetarian Restaurant

Su Le: Located on Sant Pagoda Road, clean and fresh, very modern style. The flavors are more Northwest Chinese, and the noodles are good, such as you po la zi mian (oil-splashed chili noodles), which many friends like. Also offers various coffees (American coffee 6 yuan). The outdoor seating area has a pleasant environment with comfortable tables and chairs.

Yiran Tang

Located on Bo'ai Road (Honglongjing) in the ancient city, home-style self-service vegetarian meal, 5 yuan per person. Possibly operated by a non-profit Buddhist group, they grow their own vegetables, have many volunteers helping, and the taste is good. It has been open for over ten years. It's not easy to persist in doing one thing for so many years; many similar restaurants open and close frequently. Besides vegetarians for religious reasons, many other health-conscious vegetarians, or simply budget-limited long-term residents of Dali also go there: cheap, unlimited, and tasty.

Wa Style BBQ - A Family BBQ Shop in the Village

Note: This place is too authentic and original, not suitable for ordinary people. Please be cautious. Shops like 'Wa Style BBQ' are probably the most common type in Dali. After dinner time, the only places to eat are such family BBQ shops. The Dali Old Town area is generally rural. So this kind of BBQ shop is different from the tourist stone-grill BBQ in the old town. They are scattered in every village, usually with family members working as chefs and waitstaff. A friend was having a late-night snack here, so I joined. There is a good variety of BBQ items, the ingredients are carefully prepared and fresh, and the taste is good, especially the fried rice noodles and rice shreds, which are very fragrant (I later found that most BBQ shops do a good job with these). The host is friendly, and there is a family atmosphere among the staff, which feels great. Unlike most newly opened, bright, tiled BBQ shops, this one has a somewhat shabby and narrow entrance. Gold Rose's Midnight BBQ

Gold rose near Wenxian Tower, a favorite of local friends. Raw beef is the most distinctive. Sitting on the street, it's very pleasant to eat. The BBQ is professional, clean, and well-organized. The cold edamame for drinking is delicious. Lots of choices of beer and drinks. It is a late-night eatery that combines distinctive local features with a new style.

Fly to the Moon (Brunch)

When the Moon opened around 2013, it featured an open western-style kitchen and bar, with a row of small round tables and chairs set out in the alley on Guangwu Road outside the door, giving off a French café-restaurant vibe. Not only in Dali, but across China, it was considered quite trendy. At that time, we ran a late-night eatery nearby, and often after chatting until 8:00 in the morning, we would go to the Moon for breakfast (back then, few places opened that early). We would have a bowl of Pian'er Chuan noodle soup or dry noodles, and an American coffee. Many of our most cherished memories are tied to those moments.

Simple Stone Bakery

You can sit comfortably on the sidewalk near Dali University, sometimes just to sit for a while and have a cup of coffee. American coffee is 12 yuan, aromatic enough. The bread is baked very well (European-style bread, high hydration, natural yeast). A ciabatta sandwich (braised beef) and a cup of coffee make a great meal. Their chicken liver pâté sandwich is also good. Pizza and desserts are also good. There are also homemade specialty ice cream, wine, and cocktails, all of which are great. I'm not a particular expert in Western food, but I think the quality is very good from the people to the food. The location is on Hongsheng Road near Dali University, and it is also often our meeting point for activities.

Shiyi Korean Food House

This Korean restaurant is located in a village about 15km from the ancient city. It is an open courtyard farmhouse with a large pond in front, facing the Cangshan Mountains. Ancient trees stand tall, and under the trees are hundreds of sauce vats. The scenery is unique. The grilled meat and side dishes taste good, costing 68 per person. Reservations are required. There is a WeChat mini-program: Shiyi Korean Food House for booking. It can be considered a rural scenery trip. There is no limit on the number of people; one or two people are fine. There are outdoor seating areas. In December, during the winter cherry blossom season, the cherry blossoms in the yard should be very beautiful.

Fisherman's Love Wooden Barrel Fish: Right next to Yu Gua Gua, a very distinctive local fish restaurant. Clear soup with small chili peppers, fragrant. Inside it is paired with cucumber, lettuce, and tomato, nice and refreshing colors. We go there more and more. Only one flavor preparation. Usually order suobian fish (stickier) or sturgeon (crunchy bones) which are tastier, with few fish bones. On Santalu Road, parking is convenient and not crowded.

Yu Guagua Meiwafeichangyu

This is a restaurant we often go to for gatherings, located at a lane entrance on Santa Road. It features Sichuan-Chongqing flavors, tasty and affordable. The fish, pork intestines, and bullfrog are all well prepared. For simple ordering, there are small pots (over 120 yuan), medium pots, and large pots with good proportions. When I was very hungry, I often thought of going here. Really delicious. Another important reason for us is that this area is quite residential, and roadside parking is very convenient.

Jinsheng Youyuan Grilled Fish Restaurant

At the intersection of Guangwu Road and Yuer Road. Run by a local family, simple setting, fish is freshly killed and grilled on the spot, served with plenty of vegetables. Very fragrant, even tastier with an extra portion of fish maw. You can ask for less salt (Dali locals prefer slightly salty). I really love this grilled fish – it's grilled until crispy, served at the table, with a texture that is not braised but solid. Some friends say there are better grilled fish places, but after trying, they all agree this one is the best. Whenever I occasionally invite friends to dinner, they don't need to guess which restaurant; and when they invite me, they also choose this place out of consideration (though they aren't as obsessed as I am). Maoduoli Dai-style Hand-grabbed Rice

If you haven't tried it, it's worth a try. There are set meals for two, four, or more people, and the restaurant will prepare them well, offering a rich variety. 「Indigo House」Singaporean Cuisine

This is a family-run reservation restaurant in Yinqiao, with a lovely courtyard. A family lives here and has been running the restaurant for over a decade. The customers are mostly friends from the community or travelers introduced by friends. Limei is from Singapore; she lived in Yinqiao before Dali became popular, when the area was still quite remote. I went there once myself and really liked her courtyard, which has a lively atmosphere. The kitchen is well-stocked and clean. Laoguan Pea Noodles is right at the alley entrance where I used to stay. The shop sets out a row of low tables and small stools, and most people sit under the extended eaves or against the temple wall across the street. It's bustling but not chaotic, with everyone happily eating their own meal. Any place that can survive on this street is decent, and all the other shops are also very good—it doesn't have to be this one. Affordable, delicious, with local specialties. Tiyihu Monastery Cafe (Guanyintang)

This cafe is located outside the Guanyintang Temple. One day, my friend and I sat here under the warm sunlight approaching dusk. Monks and local residents passed by the temple gate. Next door are the vegetarian restaurant "Douhe Dou's Home" and the Yesui Bakery, and not far away is the Bai ethnic restaurant street of Guanyintang. The backyard is quiet, offering a view of Guanyintang's iconic pagoda. It's a very local and well-integrated cafe within the temple grounds. Guanyintang is a great place to visit, and this cafe is a nice spot to rest.

Daji Xitang Restaurant - Refined Chinese Cuisine

When Daji was still unknown to locals, our architect Cynde stumbled upon it and strongly recommended it after staying there. The attached Xitang Restaurant is also an excellent dining choice, with rice paddies in front, distant village temples and Cangshan Mountain composing a very beautiful scene. Sit down and drink slowly." -by Swiss Roll --------------------------------- Over a decade ago, the owner of Tian Coffee, Tao Xing, began seriously learning about coffee. I remember when a man named Wang Bo came to Dali town and opened a café called "Relative Collection." It was also the first time many people saw a café roasting its own beans with professional equipment. Later, Wang Bo taught many students—some weren't exactly students, but they had a deep connection with him in the process of learning coffee. Among them was probably Tao Xing. Others include Little Bear and Yangzi's Door Coffee, Mao San Coffee, Xiao Hua's Xiangmu Coffee, Zhuang Zhuang's Qiushan Coffee, and Zhang Yin's Harvest Coffee. There are many more, not all listed. This is roughly the origin of Dali's new-style specialty coffee shops. But origin aside, everyone has to walk their own path. Overall, Tian Coffee's charm lies in its "restraint." It doesn't rely on exaggerated decoration to create a Dali vibe, but instead uses the old house's character, pour-over coffee, selection of vessels, and quiet atmosphere to present the more introverted side of Xizhou. If Xizhou's rice field cafés are for viewing scenery and taking photos, then Tian Coffee is for sitting down and experiencing the slow, detailed part of ancient town life. Nodeng

Famous for Nodeng ham, 180 km from Dali. It is an ancient village on a hillside, historically a salt-producing area with a prosperous economy and numerous salt-horse ancient roads. Due to the relatively long distance, there are usually not many tourists. The village is rustic, and the surrounding mountain villages are suitable for hiking and walking. Along the way, you pass by the Yangchimi Wild Hot Spring. Now that the expressway is open, transportation is faster. I recommend a guesthouse where I stayed: Xinkelai Inn, phone 15087295015. Although not well-known, it is affordable, homey, with ham, local chicken, and a wood-fired stove. The hosts are nice.
