Aruna was amazing, very emotionally intelligent. My mother-in-law had all sorts of requests and she responded perfectly. When she didn't want to hike, they had a tea break right there. Still unsatisfied? She picked a mushroom to cheer her up. Still not enough? They turned back to the starting point. My mother-in-law was worried about our one-year-old falling into the lake and didn't want to take the boat. Aruna simply said, 'Let's try it first, and if it doesn't work, we'll head back early.' In the end, we spent 40 minutes on the boat and my mother-in-law still hadn't had enough – the scenery was too beautiful. The child played with water and picked water lilies on the boat, having a great time. I recommend this for families with elderly and children! Aruna is very flexible.

The people of Dengchuan say that rushan (milk fan) is the white gold of the Bai people. When both hands are immersed in the warm milk curds, the milky fragrance wraps around the light and climbs between the fingers. The solidified fat spins into thin wings on bamboo poles, drying in the wind sifted through the nineteen peaks of Cangshan. The boat oar cuts through West Lake, the water ripples, the paddle sound stirs the clouds and shadows. Children and the national treasure dog play in the water, both humans and dog getting soaked😂 At Jiming Village, it's already hard to see traces of Islam from the outside. The tailor took me to visit a non-traditional mosque, the conflict between faith and reality left me unsettled for a long time. On the way back, we encountered a huge rainbow. Today's journey had the coolness of the lake water, the heat of the milk curds, and the prayers I couldn't hear must have been long and melodious, all in the same porcelain bowl, rippling like crushed silver. Xiaoqi is absolutely amazing, erudite and well-versed in history, humanities, and nature. You can ask him about any plant picked by the roadside, and he definitely knows it! Also, OOTD is on point as a tour guide.

Dali hidden gem: Eryuan Eryuan is truly a magical place. When our guide Xiaoqi took us into Eryuan, messages kept popping up on my phone by the seat. I didn't want to pick it up; I just wanted to watch the scenery outside the window. The guide told us about mimosa, cassia seeds, walnuts, and jacaranda. While on the boat on Eryuan's lake, I decided I would no longer dwell on life's trivialities. I thought I should be like nature—learn to embrace. By the way, Cangshan Hiking Tribe is a treasure. Thanks to guide Xiaoqi and Aruna.

On this overcast, rainy season day, we visited a rushan (milk fan) workshop and walked through village fields. The guide pointed out various crops to us city kids in the car. I probably remember zero, but I felt how these residents coexist with this land. Tea break in the wilderness with Rocky from Beijing, the Northeast, and even Poland. While drinking tea, we watched herders drive little black sheep home. When eating hemp seeds, the Polish guy asked what they were, and we all told him they'd get you high (they don't). We chatted randomly about everything, and I realized the essence of this trip is understanding the hidden daily lives behind scenes we might glance over, and chatting randomly with strangers. I don't know if hemp seeds get you high, but random chatting sure does. During our countryside walk, we happened upon the Hui community gathering for collective prayer. They dressed neatly and headed to the mosque, like a river flowing opposite to us in our car. At dusk, boating through the reeds, we saw egrets standing still, waiting for prey. The boat's noise startled grebes. We passed fishermen and farmers rowing to cultivate on the lake. In the cool breeze, we finally saw the sunset. But why can't the view of the sunset be a mirror image of West Lake? Whatever, I give this fun and easy Eryuan countryside trip a very Rocky response: amaze, amaze, amaze!

Joining the Eryuan rural trip was purely accidental. I chose it from the many activities of Cangshan Hiking Home due to time constraints, but it turned out to be unexpectedly rich and fun. I think if there's an order to experience the activities of Cangshan Hiking Home, the first day should definitely be with Aruna. She is truly calm and gentle, not at all forced, with a natural comfort and friendliness, like an old friend you haven't seen for years.

The Eryuan countryside hiking experience was very good. I bought local specialties like milk fan and carved plum, and the prices were very reasonable. The boating activity allowed us to enjoy the beautiful West Lake of Eryuan, with lotus ponds, reed marshes, and wild ducks and egrets on the lake. Perhaps due to Eryuan's geography, the white clouds looked like paintings—layered and three-dimensional, truly beautiful. Teacher Tailor was very patient throughout the journey and also provided an interesting tea break. We experienced the quiet southern countryside paths and saw herds of cattle and sheep in the wild. Finally, Teacher Tailor took us to eat authentic local Islamic food, which was delicious and very cheap. Also, Teacher Tailor has great photography skills and good aesthetic sense, leaving us with beautiful photos. Overall, this experience was great. The only minor drawback is that more explanations during the trip would have been better.

Boating on West Lake, weaving through the reeds, we saw ethereal water lilies, charming water hyacinths, and non-luminous cattails... Timid little grebes, raptors that can snatch food from eagles, white egrets often mistaken for cranes, and gray herons... All kinds of beautiful creatures formed a picturesque landscape... Guides Xiaochun and Jason gave detailed explanations throughout the trip, great companions. I have to mention the homemade milk popsicles—they were absolutely delicious, better than any brand I've bought, with a unique taste and sweetness... The itinerary was comfortable and relaxing, perfect for unwinding...

Three consecutive days of hiking in Dali. It was great. Elephant led the kids to pick mushrooms. Aruna and Xiaoqi took us boating on the misty West Lake. Hanhan and Xiaochun accompanied us on the one-day trip to Xipo. Each guide has extensive knowledge and experience, and chatting with them during the journey was also rewarding. Special thanks to the good dogs Zamao and Dangeng for their protection. Heart.

I joined their three-day activities all at once, and every day was super fulfilling. I am very grateful. Sometimes in the city, we forget that there are unknowns and things to explore all around us. A patch of grass that looks like nothing is full of vitality. Looking forward to meeting again, and I will carry this heart back to the city.

Hopping into the guide's red van, we bumped along all the way. First, we caught the market day in Youzuo Town, where recently for the Torch Festival you can often see various torches for sale. Then we passed by wheat fields, a green ocean under the summer evening sky, with children freely strolling along the ridges. The scenery at Small West Lake was also nice; a 72-year-old grandmother rowed a boat through one reed marsh after another, and the birds under the sun looked a bit tired. Then we went hiking in the valley and walked through a Muslim village. It was a very in-depth Eryuan experience. The guide He Chen was very patient and thoughtful with the kids. This was my first time joining an activity with Cangshan Hiking organization, and it left a very good impression! Thank you!

Tracing back to the source, we came to the origin of Erhai Lake. In Dengchuan, I drank the fresh milk I used to have as a child. At West Lake, I saw reed thickets, little grebes, and egrets. Thanks to A Ru Na and Xiao Qi for leading us. We went to a Hui village and learned about many plants, though I forgot a lot later. The experience was fantastic.

A professional, safe, and fun outdoor experience. Under the guidance of Jason, Zamao, and Alai, I spent two wonderful days with friends. I've been to Dali many times, usually as a transit point for hiking in Gaoligong and Biluo. This time I wanted to stay for a while and relax, avoiding the crowds with some easy trips. Jason has lived in Dali for 11 years and knows the area well, developing great routes and itineraries around Dali.

Extremely satisfied with the trip. Jason was very responsible and thoughtful, introducing us to all the scenery along the way. The experience was immersive, and the kids were fully engaged. With a group of people looking after the kids together, it wasn't tiring at all.

After several days of continuous rain in Dali, the Eryuan trip finally happened. In the misty rain, it was unexpectedly beautiful—boating on the lake, hiking around a Muslim village, and then soaking in a warm hot spring was so comfortable. You could feel Jason's thoughtful arrangements. A fantastic experience.

Boating, strolling & hot springs in Eryuan As the soundtrack "Reed Marshes" from A Chinese Odyssey played by a fellow traveler, we sailed through the reeds on a boat, with waterbirds swimming around and scenery like a painting. Then we drove to a Hui village, passing mosques with distinctive local architecture, strolled through the daily market, and walked along a hillside path to the fields and Green Jade Pond. Beautiful and unique plants grew along the roadside. The "uphill" slope was about the same as from the Erhai Gate to the Cangshan Gate in Dali old town—the easiest route possible. Calling it a "light hike" would be an overstatement; it was just a slow, leisurely walk, relaxing and comfortable. Finally, we went to Xiashankou Hot Spring Resort to soak in hot springs (just bring your swimsuit; public slippers are available, and towels can be rented). The pools are by the fields, and while soaking, you can watch rabbits digging—so cute. After soaking, we had dinner there, averaging 35 yuan per person, and it was delicious. Oh, and the local sweet milk in Eryuan, 5 yuan a bottle, is incredibly tasty. I chugged five bottles in one day. Don't miss it if you go to Eryuan. I first learned about this hiking experience from a friend's post. She wrote that the start of the hiking experience was so good that the rest of the trip seemed dull by comparison. For me, it's probably the same. Those three hiking experiences were the highlights of my month-long short stay in Dali and will be a huge motivation for me to come back to Dali again.

Great On my sixth day in Yunnan, I joined this niche route with some skepticism, but it exceeded expectations. Boating on Dali West Lake in the drizzling rain, passing through reeds, with leisurely egrets and purple swamphens—peaceful and romantic, with distant mountains like a faint eyebrow, as if I had stumbled into a fairyland. Then the female guide drove us to a centuries-old Muslim village. We rested and cooled off under a banyan tree, admired ethnic architecture, saw cacti growing in pine trees, beautiful mimosa flowers, and met a warm-hearted grandma who invited us into her home. Finally, we went to a hot spring hotel at the foot of the mountain, soaked in a pool by the fields, which refreshed us after a day of fatigue. The local food at the entrance was delicious and affordable. Beyond Cangshan and Erhai, Dali has so much more to offer. The female guide was very pretty and patient. Overall, very satisfied.

Soaked in the hot spring while drinking milk, watching the distant mountains and clouds. A paradise-like trip.

I spent Chinese New Year in Dali with my kids. I really didn't want to see crowds, just wanted them to get grounded and strengthen their digestion, haha! I had my eye on the famous "Cangshan Hiking Home" in Dali from their public account early on. For such a customized small-group hiking activity, the price is very fair, and free cancellation is available—very generous. I heard it's a side business of the owner of the popular "Midnight Diner" in the old town. Over six days, we did four routes and were lucky to catch the last stand-up paddleboarding session (it's too windy in winter, so SUP is suspended). My four-and-a-half-year-old softie started off a bit intimidated but gradually got a feel for the mountain trails, figuring out how to exert force on steep uphills and downhills and how to steady her steps. With the patient company of guide He Chen, she gained a lot of insight in just a few days and even became his fan. Guide Jason was humorous and enthusiastic, with a wide range of knowledge. The journey was pleasant and relaxed, as comfortable as being with old friends. Each route—Cangshan Light Hike, Huoshan Sunset Viewing, and Eryuan Hot Springs—had its own unique features. You could feel the thoughtfulness in the route design, the changing scenery along the way, and the different sensory experiences. The kids observed plants, collected flowers and grasses, experienced various mountain paths, stepped on fallen leaves and pine needles, listened to the pine waves, and watched the clouds. Seeing them tread on the earth every day, going into the mountains, lakes, and water, chasing cats and dogs, crawling around, basking in the sun, and feeling the mountain breeze—this is what childhood should be like. I've been on two trips with this group, and as someone with severe procrastination, I'm finally writing a review hahaha! Ahem... Cangshan Home was recommended to me by a friend last summer. The last time I joined a small hiking group with a guide was before I turned 30. Now that I'm older, I prefer easy leisure routes. I remember last August, when I read the introduction of Cangshan Home's hiking routes, I felt the owner must be a thoughtful person, and joining such a team would be very comfortable. He takes you to see the hillside under the sunset, the quiet tea garden in the wind, water birds skimming the surface, and black goats staring at you from across the ravine. Later, my judgment proved absolutely right. The Eryuan trip last August and the tea garden hike this January were the most wonderful memories from my four visits to Dali. Dengchuan's milk is so delicious I can't stop thinking about it, the golden figure paddleboarding on Eryuan Lake, the sheep on the Muslim village hill, the tasty snacks and black tea under the tea garden trees, and the adorable dogs like Frazzled Lucky and Hepburn. All these bring a smile to my face when I recall them. I hope in the new year, I can follow Cangshan Home on more journeys and see more beautiful scenery.

If you want to experience a truly authentic rural hike, you must try this! A friend strongly recommended it. Go to a local shop to taste fresh rushan and drink cold milk! Slowly row a boat on West Lake surrounded by blue sky, white clouds, and mountains, watching egrets and mallards! Stroll through a Muslim village deep in the mountains, relax and daydream under a century-old banyan tree, and have a picnic on the hillside while enjoying the lake view and sunset... So this is Dali beyond Cangshan and Erhai. This is the kind of travel I dream of.

Every time I come to Dali, I join activities from Cangshan Hiking Home, and they often release new routes. This time, both Eryuan West Lake and the Fern Forest were led by Honghong. She is incredibly infectious! She kept everyone laughing and chatting along the way, while taking great care of everyone. Her little dog Lucky was also with us, super cute! On the first day of the holiday, we didn't stay in the ancient town. Instead, we drove 55 kilometers north to a village at the foot of the mountains and by the lake, like a hidden paradise. Dengchuan Town. We wandered through the Bai people's market. Passing through the natural fields where villagers were working, we took a boat through the reeds and paddled deep into the lake. Clusters of purple water hyacinth flowers crowded around the bow of the boat. Countless grebes swam beside our boat, and we even saw a gathering of ducks and geese. The sky was so blue it looked fake. Ahua said it reminded her of Guo Degang's line, "The autumn water and the vast sky share one color" (?) I said it might be Su Shi's "Boating with guests under the Red Cliff, a clear breeze blowing gently, without a ripple on the water..." After getting ashore, our guide He Chen drove us through a centuries-old Muslim village. Herds of cattle and sheep occasionally passed by the car. When I passed a huge rice field, I saw a small house in the middle. He Chen said, "That's a temple." I was stunned. I remembered a dream from a book. "On an ancient road, suddenly missing the ancient souls in the words." I talked with the sheep (I know a little Cantonese!). We sat in the mountains watching the blue-toned clouds and had a picnic together. After sunset, we went to the foot of Eryuan Mountain to soak in hot springs. On the way back, it started to rain. He Chen's car is a little red Jinbei, filled with various plants. He even gave us some fresh fir cones. On the way there, the rickety van played cheerful folk music. On the way back, the music changed to slow anime tunes. We opened the windows to let in the night breeze, and the smell of barbecue wafted in. Then the sky suddenly cleared, and the moon came out. We listened to music and drove south. Ahua suddenly patted me, who was half asleep— "Look, fireworks on the opposite shore!" I looked up. In my mind, Er Shen's song "Fireworks" played: "Beyond a thought, the night breeze hasn't stopped. Two different worlds, you remember the ups and downs. Knowing we will meet again..." Nice During the Spring Festival, I spent 4 days in Dali and joined 4 activities with Cangshan Hiking Home. When I was planning my trip in January, I stumbled upon Jason's team and was drawn to their activities, so I arranged the plan a month in advance. The first activity was the beekeeping experience. Teacher Chunyu shared beekeeping knowledge effortlessly and eloquently. In one morning, I learned a lot about bees and saw different species—very impressive! The second was the Eryuan Rural Tour. We passed by a milk fan workshop in Dengchuan, boated on Dali West Lake with tall reeds, and saw ducks, purple swamphens, and egrets everywhere. We learned about an ancient village with a unique group of people who speak Bai language, wear Bai costumes, but devoutly practice Islam. The guide was Xiao Li, a very nice local. My kid especially loved the guide Xiao Zhao's bull terrier, Gangzi. The third was the highly anticipated Cangshan Full-Day Nature Observation. I met teachers Zhao Xi and Wang Bin—one knows plants well, the other loves birdwatching. My 5.5-year-old kid hiked while learning a lot, covering 12 km without getting tired, very cheerful. We had vegetarian lunch, and my kid was thrilled to eat it for the first time (always heard about it in Journey to the West). In the second half, my kid chatted with the teachers about the Three Kingdoms, very excited. Later, when seeing unfamiliar birds, my kid asked me to consult Teacher Wang. The fourth was the Huoshan Sunset. The guide was Aruna, a very friendly and considerate girl towards kids. We set off in the afternoon, visited the Shuanglang Huoshan Bai Farmer Painting Society (Chicken Nest) Café—a rural art café featuring paintings by Bai grandmothers, art creative products, and local food culture. We met artist Shen Jianhua, had coffee, climbed a small path to a platform to watch the sunset and picnic. The last sunset of the lunar year 2023 was worth it. In the evening, we were lucky to have New Year's Eve dinner with several guides—very happy. I'm very happy with this arrangement and look forward to visiting Dali again. I also want to go to Xipo and stargazing. Hope Cangshan Hiking Home gets better and better. See you next time!
